Dear TAT,

I’m wanting to get together a good Dude costume. What’re some of the things that I can buy to get a good one together?

Signed,
Ed Pohmann, Boston, MA

Well, Ed, There are a few different ways you can go about putting together a decent Dude wardrobe. Here are a couple approaches (all prices are quoted in US$):

The Very Casual Dude (Less Expensive)

    •   Bathrobe – A dark camel hair color, or dark beige (it’s been described as brown… we’d say, “light brown”) … terry cloth.. the Dude's had a vertical stripe woven or cut into it (it was also custom made for the production). This isn't a bad one!

    •   Shorts - Olive drab green/Dark blue plaid (not cargo shorts) that go down to the top of the knee.

    •   Sandals - Leather slip-ons. Click here to see a great pic.

    •   T-shirt - White, V-neck that has been washed with every dark load of clothing for a month…or two!

    •   Sunglasses - Vuarnet Legend 03, which retail at $260, though there are plenty of knockoffs out there.

    •   Note - This outfit, consisting of just the robe and the shorts, sold for $21,250 at auction. We’re betting you can get it for much less!

The Casual Dude

    •   Sweater – Pendleton Westerly – retails at $240, but with some judicious shopping you can find a decent price on eBay or a department store sale.

    •   Pants – We did some digging for you... The most exact copy runs $64 and comes from Colores del Pueblo. This is the closest match we can find. They sell for $64. On the other hand, these are $30, though they aren’t exact…

    •   T-Shirt – V-neck shirt died purple or mustard.

    •   Sneakers – Otomix Original Martial Arts shoes. Sometimes these martial arts shoes pop up on eBay for around $65.

That's me at a fest a few years back... I dressed as the pirated version of The Big Lebowski and handed out 200 DVD cases with altered cover art for The Big Lebowsky, starring Jeff Briggs and John Godman (sorry, no DVDs in them).
