Cannabutter: THC on Toast

Decades ago, people had spotty knowledge about the chemistry behind cooking with marijuana. Some folks would simply grind the flower into a fine powder and sprinkle it into some brownie mix. Others would toss the weed in a crockpot with some butter and let it simmer forever, thus giving them some butter that tasted really weird, but could give you a good buzz.

Cannabis cooks have learned that butter is the way to go. You see, the most active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). There are about 400 chemicals found in marijuana, but THC affects the brain the most (more on THC in a bit). Cannabis cooks know that cannabinoids like THC (psychotropic) and cannabidiol (CBD, which doesn’t make a person high) are fat-soluble. This means marijuana edibles with fats make the cannabinoids available to the body.

CANNABUTTER

Cannabis-infused butter is a great way to make infused cannabis edibles (like brownies, caramels, cookies or pretty much anything that contains butter). Making cannabutter can be tricky, so watch your temperatures!

Ingredients

       • 1 cup of butter

       • 1 cup (7-10 grams) of ground cannabis, decarboxylated

Don't Fuck it Up

       • Add 1 cup water and 1 cup of butter into a saucepan.

       • Simmer on low heat and let the butter melt. The water helps regulate the temperature and it prevents the butter from scorching.

       • As the butter melts, add your coarsely ground, decarbed weed.

       • Simmer over low heat (ideally between 160F and 200F) for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Don't let it coe to a full boil.

       • Strain the cannabutter by placing a funnel or strainer lined with cheesecloth on a container.

       • Once the butter has cooled a bit, pour it through the cheesecloth. Squeezing the cheesecloth can push bad-tasting plant material through and make the butter a bit more "earthy" than you might like.

       • Refrigerate the butter (about 1 hour) and excess water will form at the bottom of the container. Remove the solid butter with a knife and drain the water.

That's me at a fest a few years back... I dressed as the pirated version of The Big Lebowski and handed out 200 DVD cases with altered cover art for The Big Lebowsky, starring Jeff Briggs and John Godman (sorry, no DVDs in them).
