For those not in the know, "420" is a reference to smoking weed. "You 420 friendly?" "Sure, man, blaze up!" So, what’s the 411 on 420? In 1971, five high school students in San Rafael, California used the term "4:20" when they were planning to find an abandoned crop of marijuana. The grower, a member of the Coast Guard, had given them a map, and they were determined to find it.
They called themselves "the Waldos" because they hung-out on a wall outside the school. The students decided to meet at their High School’s Louis Pasteur statue at 4:20 PM to head out on their quest. The plan was called, "4:20 Louis."
They never found the weed, but they did find a way to talk about when they were gonna get together to smoke some, shortening the phrase to "4:20."
There are some other origination stories for 420 out there, but after doing a fair amount of reading, this is the one that seems to be the most documented. We pick this one.
